Refyne & Defyne
Refyne and Defyne are the newest additions to the Restylane family of products from Galderma. They are specifically formulated hyaluronic acid dermal fillers that are specifically used to correct smile (marionette) lines for a more natural and youthful looking face.
The main difference between the two is that Restylane Refyne treats mild to moderate lines and wrinkles, while Restylane Defyne is used to treat moderate to severe smile lines. Both fillers are long lasting – up to 12 months.
As our skin loses elasticity with age, some facial lines become more noticeable. The lines that run from the sides of your nose toward the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds) and the lines that run from the corner of your mouth toward the chin (marionette lines) can become more defined. Refyne and Defyne are perfect for these areas because they are more flexible and suited for areas of the face with more movement.
Restylane Lyft
Lyft is an incredibly versatile filler – used to treat moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. We use it to add volume to the cheeks, erase smile lines around the mouth, fill in sunken or hollow temples, and even for an amazing non-surgical nose job! We cover each of these areas in a bit more detail below.
Lifting the Cheeks
As we age, our midface invariably begins to droop. Cheeks that were once high begin to sink toward our earlobes, masking our jawline and creating a tired and sagging facial appearance. Also, when our cheeks begin to droop, those awful parenthesis-like lines around our mouth become overemphasized. Such drooping and deep wrinkling are telltale signs of aging, making us look old, tired and even angry.
Restylane Lyft uplifts the cheeks, restoring the jawline and erasing the “parenthesis” on either side of the mouth. Impressive before and after photos show what a subtle yet dramatic change is made by simply adding volume to the cheeks and softening those “parenthesis” around our mouths (technically unappetizingly referred to as nasolabial folds). Post-treatment, clients are immediately remarkably more youthful and lively and happy looking, perhaps accounting for the 100% satisfaction rate.* A beautiful, youthful face tends to have high and defined cheek bones. We can restore that volume and shape to the face.
Erasing Smile Lines around the Mouth
While Restylane Lyft is FDA-approved to help correct the sagging face (by adding cheek volume), it is also approved to erase “smile lines”. Erasing the vertical lines that develop and spread from the corners of our mouth to the jawline provides a more subtle improvement in our appearance. We are suddenly less old looking, but it is extremely difficult for anyone to pinpoint just what brought about this pleasing and enhancing change.

Filling in Hollow Temples
Another subtle and yet meaningful shift results from filling in our depressed temples. Volume loss in the temple area is another sure sign of aging. Using Restylane Lyft to rejuvenate the temple area – filling in the depressions that unfortunately only sink further as we age – provides one of the most understated yet significant strategies for creating a naturally youthful visage.
Non-surgical Nose Job
Restylane Lyft is also the perfect filler for a “non-surgical nose job.” The procedure fills in depressed areas of the nose, lifting the angle or tip and/or smoothing the appearance of bumps on the bridge of the nose. Although fillers cannot (perhaps obviously) make the nose smaller, it can indeed create the appearance of a smaller nose by making the nose look straighter. Non-surgical nose jobs are increasing popular for men and women of all ages as they provide many of the benefits usually only attainable through surgery.
A Great First-time Filler
We would especially recommend Restylane Lyft for those who are considering fillers for the first time. Both products provide subtle yet pleasing changes. Also, if you are not satisfied with the results, the effects of hyaluronic acid fillers can be partially or even fully reversed. (Such clients’ requests are noted to be quite rare, and we’ve never had such a request in our practice).
Like other Restylane products, Restylane Lyft is made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, and is distributed throughout connective and neural tissue. It is a key component of the extra cellular matrix, a framework of our bodies’ various protein structures which also includes collagen and proteoglycans. Hyaluronic acid enables these protein structures to better hold water, forming a goo that provides cushioning, resiliency, and moisture to our joints, nerves, hair, skin and Dr. Janowski will use an ultrafine needle for the procedure. The tiny needle combined with the lidocaine that is included in the product creates very minimal pain. Full results are almost always attained in a single visit and results are expected to last from 10 to 12-months. Also, cumulative treatments, 10 to 12 months apart, lead to cumulative and prolonged benefits.
As ever, if you are extra sensitive to pain and/or have concerns about the treatment, please talk them over with Dr. Janowski. Your comfort is always our primary consideration and we will do all we can to help you mitigate possible side-effects.*
Restylane Silk
While there have been a number of effective fillers used off-label for lip enhancement and smoothing of wrinkles around the lips, Retsylane Silk is the one and only product FDA-approved for this purpose. As we get older, our lips too show telltale signs of aging. Our once plumpish lips get thinner and begin to lose shape. Most noticeably, wrinkles begin to appear around the mouth and lips – smile lines that were once cute and added personality become too broad and deep, making us look old and as if we are always frowning.
For some of us too, our lips have always felt less full and shapely than we’d like. Restylane Silk address both the aging impact as well the concerns of those who – regardless of age – would like fuller and more naturally kissable lips. (Note: Restylane Silk is only approved for ages 21+).
Dr. Janowski loves using Restylane Silk to define the lips and add in your most natural, soft volume. It is the smoothest filler and allows for fine detail work.
While FDA-approved for lips, Restylane Silk can also be used to correct other fine lines including crow’s feet, forehead lines, and horizontal neck lines. Restylane Silk – because of its small particle size – is also ideal for correcting volume loss in the upper eyelid, tear troughs, and eyebrow.
Nature’s Filler: Hyaluronic Acid
Restylane Silk is similar to other Restylane products but is comprised of smaller, smoother particles and is generally used for moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. All Restylane products are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, and is distributed throughout connective and neural tissue. It is a key component of the extra cellular matrix, a framework of our bodies’ various protein structures that also includes collagen and proteoglycans.
Hyaluronic acid enables these protein structures to better hold water, forming a goo that provides cushioning, resiliency, and moisture to our joints, nerves, hair, skin and eyes. Hyaluronic acid was first introduced as a healing agent in the 1970s. Today is used widely in the medical field, including for treating cataracts, inflammation and to heal wounds. It has been used as a dermal filler in Europe and the US since the mid-2000s.
Hyaluronic acid is also the base product for the Juvederm and Belotero fillers. Because it is a naturally occurring substance in the body, it is tolerated by all patients.
Kissable Lips – Your Doctor Visit
Dr. Janowski will use an ultrafine needle for the procedure. The tiny needle combined with the lidocaine that is included in the product tends to provide a more comfortable patient experience that was previously possible for lip treatments. He also typically uses a dental block to numb the lips prior to injections. The lips are a very sensitive part of the body, and we want you to be extremely comfortable during the procedure.
As with other filler procedures, Dr. Janowski may opt to use a blunt needle called a canula, which allows for beautiful placement of the filler and less damage to the tissue – all of which equals less bruising and swelling.
That said, reported post-treatment side effects could include swelling, redness, pain, and bruising. These side effects tend to be mild and in nearly every case were resolved in a few days. To reduce the risk of bruising, swelling, and other symptoms, avoid consuming alcohol in the days before and after your treatment. Also, we recommend avoiding taking any blood-thinning medications one week before treatment, such as aspirin, fish oil, vitamin E supplements, garlic tablets, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba, as advised by your physician. If you are extra sensitive to pain and/or have concerns about the treatment, please talk them over with Dr. Janowski. Your comfort is our primary consideration and we will do everything we can to help you mitigate any possible side-effects.
Results
Restylane Silk has an incredibly high satisfaction rate. According to Realself, 96% of those who tried the product thought it was totally worth it. One of the only downsides is its longevity. Because our lips move so much, it is one area where touch-ups tend to be required about every six-months to one-year.*
