Specialized Injection Therapy for Headaches
Millions of people suffer from chronic headaches in the United States. Many suffer from tension headaches, migraines or a combination of the two. Traditional treatments for headaches include medications that have many side effects, are costly, and often not effective. In fact, one of the most common headache types is ‘medication overuse headache’, which is actually caused by the medications people take to improve headaches! For these reasons, doctors and patients continue to seek solutions for chronic headaches that don’t involve having to take pills.
Broomfield and Westminster: Dysport® for Headaches
Most headaches, regardless of classification, involve some degree of muscle tension or spasm, so newer therapies target the muscles, helping them to relax. These new treatments involve a combination of injections of botulinum toxin (Botox®) and injections of lidocaine into specific muscle groups, called trigger point injections. Dysport® can be used to treat a number of neuromuscular conditions, including chronic migraine. It is injected into several muscle groups in the face and head, relaxing those muscles. Trigger point injections are administered in the neck and upper back in order to relax tight muscle knots in these areas. The combination can significantly reduce headache, neck pain and associated muscle spasm and tension. Injections are performed typically once every 3 months. Trigger point injections are performed more frequently, depending on the severity of pain and the response to treatment. These procedures are simple, safe, and effective. The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches, reduce dependence on other medications, and improve quality of life.
In our Broomfield, Colorado office, Dr. Janowski is trained to inject Dysport® in the areas clinically proven to relieve headache tension. Even if you don’t have clinically diagnosed migraine headaches, Botox® can be used to relieve symptoms and lessen the frequency of headaches.
