Empowering beauty
When I scroll through my facebook feed, I see so many beautiful and inspiring stories about my friends’ wellness regimens. From Crossfit stats, to amazing hikes, to healthy meals they prepared – I love seeing the dedication and confidence of so many of my peers to their health and fitness.
My cohorts, especially my female friends, love to share the healthy lifestyle choices that they are making. The messages of empowerment and self-love are clear. Taking charge of your health and fitness can be an incredibly validating choice – and one you should be proud of. Owning your body and caring for yourself is a positive, life-affirming choice.
I see the work we do as just as empowering. I see the process of reclaiming your body and your face as an essential party of empowerment. I like to call this process of coming to know and own your body “Embodied Sovereignty”. You are the sovereign of your own life, and your body is the vehicle through which you live this life. I think that choices made to positively own, accept, love, and claim your body are a part of awakening to the divine in yourself.
I think the reason you don’t see (most) people proudly posting selfies of the cosmetic treatments they have had done on facebook is because of the mixed up and confused marketing that is the unfortunate basis of our industry. The aesthetics space has been seen as vain and superficial – the domain of the Real Housewives -where everyone starts to look the same, and frivolity and flashy-spendy are a part of a carefully crafted image. Of course, everyone has the right to share or to keep private anything that they choose – but I actively want to encourage you to feel pride in the empowering choices you have made – even if the knowledge of that choice is for you alone.
We can confidently tell you that our patients don’t look or act like Real Housewives. They are business-people and parents and hard-working, regular folk – who want to look on the outside how they feel on the inside. And it is never our goal to have everyone look the same – but rather, to have you look like the most radiant version of yourself.
The aesthetics industry is a young field – and one heavily dominated by men – and I think this has lead to the mis-match between the amazing, beautiful people we see in our office every day – and the too-young, overtly sexualized women seen in so much of the advertising for cosmetic treatments.
I can’t for the life of me imagine what a 20-something girl, draped in red silk, and blown around by a wind-machine has to do with the clients we see who are here to live confidently and reclaim their bodies. Most of our clients are in their mid-40s to mid-60s, and most are professional working parents, far from the vacuous world of the Kardashians. If you are 50, it shouldn’t be your goal to look like a 19 year old model – and I can’t understand why these types of images are selected by those that market in this industry. I think that seeing images of too-young girls is exclusionary – and prevents people from making the leap in to the world of aesthetic medicine – which can provide you with so many tools for feeling more confident in your own, beautiful skin.
Where aesthetic medicine actually fits, and where it is going (if I have anything to do with it), is in the wellness space. The same impulse you have to work out and improve your health is the reason why our clients make the decision to prevent wrinkles or improve their skin tone. You want to feel your best – and all of the many services we offer are here to help you do that – at a pace and budget that you are comfortable with. We want you to look natural. We want you to feel your most confident – and we have a plethora of treatments at your disposal to make that happen.
I look forward to the day when aesthetic medicine is situated right next to the juice bar and the pilates demonstration at a health fair. I hear it in the reviews from our clients – and in the stories that they share with us – that aesthetic medicine is a part of their quest to live their best, most self-actualized life.
From the client who is able to soften their acne scars, revealing clearer skin to the professional wanting to feel more secure when meeting new clients – we are here to partner with you in living the life you love without being preoccuppied with your appearance.
Let us keep you looking radiant – and that will be one less thing you have to worry about when out in the world making your dreams come true.
