What to Expect: Sculptra
Sculptra is generally not as well-known as fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane, though it has been around longer than either product. While Juvederm and Restylane are excellent fillers, literally filling in specific facial lines, Sculptra is more of an all-over facial volumizer. It provides a gradual natural lift and fills wrinkles. It is an all-over facial booster and therefore truly a treatment we could most accurately call the “liquid facelift.”
Sculptra tends to be especially natural looking because it replaces lost collagen, restoring the deep underlying structure of the skin. Unlike a surgical face lift, results appear gradually and naturally, with little or no downtime for most patients.
As we begin to age, areas of our face lose that youthful fleshiness. At first imperceptible, starting in our late 30s, our temples, checks, the area around our mouth, and our jawline become hollowed. In our 40s, we mostly lose facial fat. However by our 50s (as we reach and enter menopause), we actually being to lose bone as well. This results in an overall tired and even droopy visage, our temples, cheeks and chin sagging.
Sculptra treats and revitalizes all of these areas slowly and naturally restoring vivacity.
Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and helps to rebuild lost collagen.
Sculptra treatments are usually completed in a series of three treatments, about six week apart.

Be Prepared
While most patients report few or no side-effects, you may wish to take precautions to prevent swelling and bruising.
If you are especially prone to bruise, we strongly suggest starting a week before your appointment, you avoid fish oil supplements and any other blood thinning non-essential medication and vitamins, such as aspirin and Vitamin E. Remember, age is a factor in the likelihood for bruises –the older we are, the more likely we are to bruise.
The Procedure
Dr. Janowski will discuss potential treatment areas and his rationale for his recommended treatment plan. The goal is a gradual transformation, restoring facial fullness over time, usually with three treatments spaced six weeks apart.
The Sculptra needle is mixed with lidocaine – a local anesthetic and most patients report little or no pain. If you are sensitive please don’t hesitate to let us know. We can apply a topical numbing cream about 45 minutes before the treatment and also take other measures to help mitigate any pain.
Typical injection areas include the temples, mid and upper check, jawline, chin and smile area, closer to the nose.
Post Pro
Dr. Janowski will massage treated areas. You should continue massage the treated areas three times per day over the next three days.
There can be a slight fullness in the treated area for a couple of days after the treatment. This is because there is water in Sculptra. It is usually a nice look that helps you get a sense of what it will be like when the treatment has taken full effect, usually a period of two to six weeks after the treatment.
In general, our patients report no side effects beyond minor swelling and a headache-y feel in the temples that lasts for up to two days. Yet there are some patients who have experienced prolonged bruising and swelling, lasting up to one-week.
Just a couple of weeks after your treatment, you will start to see the difference. You’ll start looking less tired and sallow…Your checks and chin will start to have more fullness and more definition.
The results can really feel miraculous – holistically improving an aging visage naturally and beautifully, a methodology fillers or Botox® alone simply can’t address.
