Why do some people’s lips look so fake?
by Elizabeth Janowski
Full lips are “in”. We get more and more calls each day from woman wanting to enhance their lip volume and improve their lip shape. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner have normalized getting lip filler – and there is nothing wrong with that. One of the great things about adding volume to the lips is that it is completely reversible – and the filler dissolves naturally over time – so it is a very low commitment treatment option.
All of us will lose volume in our lips as we age. It’s a normal part of the aging process. We will all also develop a less defined vermillion/lip border. Both of these issues can be corrected under the hands of a skilled physician injector, like Dr. Janowski. Dr. Janowski injects more lips than almost anyone in the state and the vast majority (99%) of the patients he sees want a natural looking like augmentation. Using specially designed and very soft products like Restalyne Silk can help patients achieve natural, soft, defined lips – without looking like a “duck“.
Some celebrities, like Lisa Rinna, have given lip augmentation a bad name. And we often get asked, why is it that her lips look so very unnatural? There are two reasons. The first is that it is widely assumed that Lisa Rinna had a lip implant – something rarely done anymore. She also has admitted to having her lips filled with silicone – a precursor to the softer, natural, hylauronic acid based fillers we use today. Silicone is no longer used as a lip filler.
But, the second and biggest reason is that her lips do not follow the rule of the “golden proportions”. Dr. Janowski often says that the top lip should be 40%Â and the bottom lip 60%Â – together creating the perfectly proportioned mouth. These aren’t just Dr. Janowski’s magic ratios – these are the “divine proportions” used by artists for centuries.
Lisa Rinna’s top lip is larger than her bottom lip – creating the distorted look. Top lips should generally never be bigger than bottom lips. This is why her lips look odd and overdone to even the most “untrained” eye.
We aren’t quite sure why Lisa wouldn’t want her lips to be in a more “ideal” proportion – but to each her own.
Dr. Janowski is very committed to giving each patient the results they desire – however, he strongly advises patients to stick to the divine proportion with lips – and to start off natural and beautifully defined. And if you really want to go for it with bigger, fuller, more Hollywood lips – take that step slowly.
Our patients are generally seeking beautifully, subtle, ageless results. And that is our specialty.
