What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning may be one of the best-kept secrets in the beauty biz. It’s not a widely known procedure, and even among those who know about it, many shy away from it and don’t realize what great results it gives.
The Dermaplaning Procedure
Dermaplaning should not be confused with dermabrasion or microdermabrasion, in which powered tools are used to mechanically remove layers of your skin.
In dermaplaning, a knife is scraped along your skin. Although this is somewhat like shaving, there are several differences. First, the blade isn’t as sharp as one used for shaving. It’s done without shaving cream or other lubricants, and the goal isn’t to remove your hair, though the thin vellus hairs (peach fuzz) are also removed.
It’s the similarity to shaving that makes some women nervous. They’re afraid that it will lead to hair growing back thicker and darker, but this, frankly, isn’t true. Hair that’s scraped off won’t come back thicker or darker. It grows back as it was, which is determined by genetics.
Benefits of Dermaplaning
Now that we know what dermaplaning doesn’t do, how’s about we talk about what dermaplaning really does. Dermaplaning:
- Exfoliates
- Removes surface toxins
- Adds a youthful luster to skin
- Removes fine hairs
- Makes skin receptive to facials
Dermaplaning is also 100% chemical-free, so it’s an exfoliation and rejuvenation treatment that can be used by people who are trying to avoid chemical exposure, either because of skin sensitivity, health conditions, or as part of a more natural lifestyle.
By removing the vellus hairs, dermaplaning can result in skin that is exceedingly smooth to the touch, and to the eye. Vellus hairs can interfere with makeup, leading to an uneven appearance.
Once people try dermaplaning, they usually love it. If you would like to see whether dermaplaning is right for you, please contact Sonata Aesthetics, helping patients across Denver, Broomfield, and Westminster.
